Rhinoplasty
Rhinoplasty or more commonly the nose job, aims to enhance the natural features of the face. Cosmetic corrective rhinoplasty requires expert technique and skill as well as an artistic ability in order to aesthetically match the nose to the face of the person. This takes many years of experience.
To perform rhinoplasty , Mr Turner not only considers the features of the patient’s nose causing concern, such as such as a large hump, flaring nostrils, hooked eagle like tip or fat button end but also other features that may be less obvious to the patient. For example, correction of a hump or bulbous tip alone may unbalance the features of the nose and if not dealt with in an artistic manner can cause an undesirable and unattractive result.
Mr Turner uses a technique known as a Closed Rhinoplasty where the skin of the nose is lifted from inside allowing him to mould the nose to design without causing any external visible scarring, excessive bleeding or swelling. A Closed Rhinoplasty causes far less pain, bruising, swelling and time hiding away and the patient is usually back in circulation after only a week. The ‘Open Rhinoplasty’ procedure on the other hand involves peeling the skin off the nose through skin wounds, made usually at the bottom of the nose, resulting in much more swelling, bruising and discomfort.
Mr Turner learnt the technique of Closed Rhinoplasty in London over thirty years ago and has been perfecting these operative skills since that time. Few plastic surgeons in practice today have the experience or techniques to use the Closed Rhinoplasty method with success or confidence.
The Closed Rhinoplasty can be divided into three procedures:
SOFT TISSUE RHINOPLASTY
A Soft Tissue Rhinoplasty is indicated where the tip of the nose is fat, heavy and round, button like or prominent. In other cases the sides of the nose (the alars) are wide and flaring or the middle strut is prominent, crooked or hanging down. This type of rhinoplasty involves cartilage only and can be dealt easily with incisions inside the nostrils. There is no bone surgery and a plaster splint will not be necessary. Bruising and pain are very minimal and return to activity is within a few days. This procedure can often be done as a day case and results are very predictable and can improve the appearance to an amazing degree.
BONY RHINOPLASTY
A Bony Rhinoplasty is performed when the tip of the nose and upper lip are quite normal and aesthetically pleasing, but the patient has a large hump deformity of the nasal bridge or a nose with very wide nasal bones, giving a boxer like appearance. In these cases, once again through incisions inside the nose the lump is removed and the side nose bones are reset in a closer position so giving an aesthetically pleasing nose bridge profile. If the nose is crooked or deviated it can be straightened at the same time. Surgery to the nasal bones can result in more bleeding, discomfort and blackened eyes; the patient is also required to wear a plaster for about six days. However return to normal activity should only take around ten days.
FULL RHINOPLASTY
The Full Rhinoplasty involves attention to both the nasal bones and the cartilages of the nose and septum. In these cases, the whole of the nose is remodeled reducing all structures of the nose so as to give the desired aesthetic new nose balanced features and a match to the patient’s renewed facial appearance with regard to the ethnicity of the patient. This procedure requires much experience, skill and considerable artistic ability to achieve a rewarding outcome for the patient.
When necessary bone tissue and some cartilage removed during surgery can be inserted into the point of the chin to give enhancement of the jaw line and improve the profile. Often a large nose is associated with a recessive chin and this is a very successful method using the bodies own tissue to further improve the patient’s appearance.
In a large number of cases there are also associated breathing and snoring problems. These may be corrected or improved by attention to the nose passages and septum during the procedure.
Mr Turner has years of surgical experience performing Rhinoplasty, the Closed Rhinoplasty is one of his most frequently performed procedures.
Do you use photo imaging?
A computer generated image can easily manufacture results that while pleasing may not be surgically possible or misleading to the patient. The contents of fashion magazine are a great example of what a computer can artificially generate to aesthetically alter the human form.
It’s a fact; just about anyone can produce and alter an image on a computer. Surgery to the nose should be taken very seriously; a manufactured computer image will not guarantee the skill, the experience or the artistic ability of the surgeon using the software. While we appreciate patients may enjoy the experience, Mr Turner believes photo imaging can be most misleading for the patient and chooses not to use it.
