What's number one in anti-aging?

Not so secret information from our skin care clinic!

If you do nothing else for your skin, wear sunscreen.  UV radiation is the single greatest cause of damage to our skin and accelerator of aging. We advocate use of a non-chemical sunscreen for everyday use.  Chemical sunscreens lose their protection after approximately three hours and require re-application to keep the protection going.

It’s a common fallacy that foundation make up provides protection from the sun’s rays.  If your foundation has a sunscreen it may provide protection for up to three hours, depending on its UV rating and spectrum coverage, beyond that unless you reapply a foundation with sunscreen in it, you’re exposing your skin to damage and let’s face it, excessive application of foundation would bring about other undesirable problems to the skin.  Mineral make-up is also credited with giving protective coverage, but once again we feel it may be rubbed off the skin and still recommend application of sunscreen.

Unfortunately UVA radiation, which is a known major cause of aging in Australia, can penetrate glass so unprotected skin or a chemical sunscreen that has been on the skin for more than three hours leave you exposed to free radical damage.  Non-chemical sunscreens are not absorbed by the body and protect the skin until such time as they are washed or sweated off, in most circumstances a single daily application is all that is required, unless of course you’re exercising or swimming.  We carry a range of non-chemical sunscreens that are light, non-sticky and a great base for make-up.  Additionally due to non-absorption are suitable for all skin type including acne and oily skins.
