Mr Alister Turner - Plastic Surgeon

Frequently Asked Questions

Our most frequently asked questions appear below.

01. What is your training in Plastic Surgery?

A: Mr Turner trained to become a plastic surgeon under one of the world’s most recognised authorities and a recognised father of plastic surgery, Mr John Barron. At the time of Mr Turner’s training in Salisbury England, Mr Barron was performing mostly cosmetic work and it was because of this that Mr Turner developed such a focused interest in cosmetic reconstructive work and brought this training and knowledge back to Australia when he returned.

02. Why don’t you publish before and after pictures on your website?

A: Patient privacy and confidentiality.

Before and after photos tend to focus on excellence, added to the fact that photos can be digitally modified, another patient’s photos may not be a realistic outcome at all for your personal circumstances and may not necessarily be normal representation of a surgeon’s work.

03. Do you have photographs of your work available for viewing?

A: A cross-section of photographs of Mr Turner’s work is available on appointment with him. We only use Polaroid photographs; these can’t be modified or changed.

04. Should I bring in photos to show you a look I want to achieve?

A: You can, it can provide a guide however all patients need to be aware photographs of others may not be realistically achievable or may not provide an aesthetically good choice for you. This will be discussed at consultation. Your natural, genetic physical make up is a very important determining factor in what is realistically achievable for you.

05. Do you offer a complimentary appointment with your nurse or a staff member?

A: No. We are very proud of our practice staff, they will assist you as much as they possibly can, however the fact remains that only Mr Turner has the medical training and surgical experience to realistically and honestly assess your personal circumstances.

06. What are your most commonly performed procedures?

A: Mr Turner’s most frequently performed procedures are Breast Augmentation and Rhinoplasty, however all procedures on our website are commonly performed by him including Blepharoplasty or eyelid surgery as it is commonly called.

07. What are the biggest changes to Cosmetic surgery in recent years?

A: The biggest demand in Cosmetic Surgery is patients wanting a natural look. In years gone by it was quite obvious to all when an aging movie star had had a face lift. The tight face lift of the past has been replaced with a much softer and more natural look that is well enhanced by the variety of dermal fillers now available.

With breast augmentation, there seems to be a misguided perception that all women want increasingly larger implants, that’s just not true. We cater for everyone, however, based on Mr Turner’s experience, which is substantial, today’s women mostly want breast implants that have a natural look and feel to them and an implant size to compliment and enhance their figure not over-ride it.

Rhinoplasty or nose-jobs change with fashion; we’ve seen elfin noses, curved noses and now a flatter more aesthetically natural nose. A rhinoplasty is very much determined by the ethnicity of the patient and certainly Asian noses have quite a separate set of issues to a Western nose, Eastern Nose or African nose. Mr Turner sees lots of noses from all corners of the world!

08. Do some procedures require more than one operation?

A: Some procedures such as breast reconstruction may require two or three operations; this is normal and carried out in two or in the occasional more difficult case three very carefully planned stages to achieve the final desired result. This type of procedure may be carried out over quite a few months.

The key to achieving a successful outcome in reconstruction surgery is of course patience.

It is very important to keep in mind that the best possible final result is the objective of reconstruction surgery, not the first one or two preparation stage operations that allow the final result to be achieved.

09. What hospitals do you go to?

A: Mr Turner operates exclusively from Bethesda Private Hospital, Claremont. He has been the Chairman of the Medical Advisory Committee for some years as well as a board member and as such Bethesda has a particular focus on Plastic Surgery. The staff is well trained in cosmetic procedure and surgical facilities are kept up to date and are state of the art.

Our patients commonly refer to Bethesda as ‘Hotel Bethesda’ Bethesda has in recent times been extensively extended and refurbished. Many of its rooms enjoy a somewhat serene, panoramic outlook over the river. Bethesda too has a state of the art commercial kitchen providing patients with quality meals more common to a restaurant than a hospital. We feel it provides the caring, supportive environment we want for our patients.

10. What are some of the commonly performed procedures you don’t perform?

A: We don’t offer thread lifts, they are yet to be proven, the down side from the evidence available suggests the threads can break and particles of thread may become loose through the tissue of the face. The tension on the thread may also be lost after a few months. Mr Turner rarely performs facial skin lasering; for most people we believe there are better alternatives available today. Additionally, he also does not perform male implant surgery, thigh lifts or full body lifts.
